Federal Solar Tax Credit Status in 2026
- Residential, owner-owned (cash or loan): the 30% federal credit under Section 25D expired for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. The current federal credit for this category is 0%.
- Residential, lease or PPA: you don't own the system, so you can't claim a federal credit directly. The third-party system owner may claim the commercial credit (Section 48E) and choose to pass some savings to you as a lower monthly rate — this is not guaranteed and varies by provider.
- Commercial: the Section 48E commercial credit remains active through 2027 for eligible projects, currently modeled at 30% in our commercial solar calculator.
State and utility-level incentives — rebates, SRECs, property tax exemptions, and sales tax exemptions — are separate from the federal credit and may still apply regardless of ownership type. Check your state energy office or utility for current programs, since these vary widely and change independently of federal law.
