Is Battery Storage Worth It?

Adding battery storage — like a Tesla Powerwall or similar residential unit — increases your upfront system cost, typically by a meaningful five-figure amount for a single unit. In return, it lets you store solar energy for use after sunset, provides backup power during outages, and in some utility territories can shift usage away from expensive peak-rate hours.

Toggle "Add Battery Storage" on in Step 2 above to see how it changes your gross cost, net cost after any applicable federal credit, and payback period compared to a solar-only system. Because the federal residential tax credit (Section 25D) expired for owner-owned systems installed after 2025, battery add-ons no longer receive that 30% offset either for most homeowners — factor the full added cost into your decision.
