Solar Payback Calculator
Find out exactly how many years until your solar system pays for itself.
What Is a Solar Payback Period?
Your payback period is the number of years it takes for the money you save on utility bills to equal what you paid for your solar system. A shorter payback period means you reach net savings sooner; a longer one means it takes more years before solar becomes a net financial win.
Payback period depends heavily on your net system cost after any applicable tax credit, your current utility rate, and how fast that rate rises over time. Because the 30% federal residential credit (Section 25D) expired for owner-owned systems installed after December 31, 2025, most 2026 payback estimates are longer than the estimates homeowners saw in prior years — this calculator reflects that change by default rather than an outdated 30%-off assumption.
